Avery, the birthday girl

Avery, the birthday girl

Avery is recovering from her surgery and chemo treatments. She has always been a happy and easy-going baby,  and now that she is feeling better, she just plays all day long.

A few days ago, her aunt Alana took Avery’s big brother, Austin, to his soccer game while Avery and her parents went out for date night. Once they were finished with dinner, they came to watch the rest of Austin’s game. Avery was friendly to everyone, talking and smiling, going to people and sitting on their laps. All the soccer parents were captivated with her beauty, cheerfulness, friendliness and intelligence. Wherever she goes, Avery makes people happy.

Avery’s doctors are hopeful and positive about her future health and progress. To be safe, they will do a regimen of four more chemo treatments. Starting on March 15th, Avery will go to the hospital every fourth Monday for two days each time. Once this is over, she will hopefully never have to worry about cancer again.

Please join me in wishing this little girl all the health, happiness and goodness this world has to offer. She is only one year old, and has suffered so much, but we can all learn from her how to approach whatever befalls us with grace, courage and good will.

Avery’s mom Sheila has organized a Relay for Life team in Avery’s honor. Relay for Life is an event that celebrates cancer survivors, and raises funds for the American Cancer Society.

Good News About Avery!

Happy Birthday, little angel!

Happy Birthday, little angel!

I wrote about Avery Klemola a few weeks ago. She is a little girl who was diagnosed with non-
rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare cancer that has the characteristics of three different types of cancer, all in one. The disease had spread to her lungs (making it stage 4) and her prognosis was not promising. For close to five months now she has been undergoing chemo therapy. When she went into surgery yesterday, her doctors had no idea what to expect. They didn’t know if the surgery would last one hour or eight hours, depending on how far the cancer had spread.

Forty five minutes into the surgery, the doctors came out and called Avery’s mom Sheila in for a conference. No one knew what to think. Is this a good sign or a bad sign? Well, for once, the news couldn’t have been better. The surgery was shorter than anyone had expected – the tumor was on the very edges of the two facial nerves and was easy to remove. The chemo therapy had done its job and contained the cancer.

This has not been an easy winter for many of the people I know and care about. Yesterday’s news about Avery’s prognosis was  a ray of joyous sunshine in the life of all the people who know her or have just heard of her. There is hope now and her prognosis is good. Avery will have four more chemo sessions and then go for checkups on a regular basis. Her doctors will keep careful watch over her. But everyone is hoping that she will be cured forever and that the cancer will never come back again.

Avery has a birthday coming up. She turns one year old this coming Sunday, February 21st. Happy birthday, little angel! May you live a long and happy life.

Baby Avery

Baby Avery

Baby Avery

Avery Klemola is 11 months old and lives in Garden City, Michigan with her mom Sheila, dad Shawn, and brothers, Austin and Ben. Last summer Sheila noticed a little bump on Avery’s cheek. It looked innocent at first, but it kept growing and Sheila got concerned.  It turned out to be non-rhabdomyosarcoma – a rare cancer that has the characteristics of three different types of cancer, all in one. By this time, the disease had already spread to Avery’s lungs, raising it to Stage 4.

Things looked bleak last fall.  Avery had a port inserted in her chest and had four sessions of very aggressive chemotherapy. Since the tumor is attached to her facial nerve, the surgeons wanted to reduce its size before considering surgery. Family and friends rallied together and helped the best they could. People babysat, took the boys to soccer, cleaned Sheila’s house, and went to the hospital with Avery. Fundraisers were organized almost weekly to help the young family with medical bills. Both Sheila and Shawn had to take time off from work to take Avery to chemo sessions and be with the baby on difficult days.

Through the ordeal, Avery did amazingly well. After four rounds of chemo, her cancer has shrunk and there are no traces of lesions in her lungs. She will be undergoing surgery around the time of her first birthday (February 21st)  and then have four more sessions of chemo. She is a beautiful, curious, cheerful, little girl, loving and trusting to all around her.
